My parents spent the weekend here with us in Chester and we had a tasty meal out at Fatcats and visit to Port Sunlight on Sunday.
Port Sunlight is a model village on the Wirral that was built by William Hesketh Lever in the late 19th century to house his workers that worked in the Lever Brothers soap factory (now part of Unilever). Lever was a philanthropist that cared about his workers, building them good size houses with reasonable rents that were in stark contrast to the usual slum housing for factory workers. He also provided schools, libraries and various societies for self-improvement. Lever gave workers a weeks paid holiday and a pension which was unheard of at the time. Port Sunlight contains 900 Grade II listed buildings and each block of houses were designed by a different architect. (photos to follow)
Sadly on Monday morning we received the news that my poorly Nan (who’d been living her last months in a nursing home) died. I don’t think she ever really got over my Grandad’s death from 2 years ago. Healthwise, she certainly went downhill since then.
