Back in September I studying with the Open University. I do regret never completing my A-levels or getting a degree (the depression got in the way) but felt I needed some mental stimulation. As I hadn’t studied for a while I started with an Openings course which is designed to improve your studying skills and build up confidence. I studied “Understanding Society” which was an interesting course involving topics such as the family, globalisation and migration. I had to produce 3 essays, the first two were marked by the friendly tutor and the last one was an end of course assignment.

I received my results today in the post and I’m pleased to report I passed. This means I have got 10 points and you need 360 points for a degree. I have enrolled myself on the next course with a view to getting a BA/BSc (Honours) Social Sciences with Sociology. As I’m studying part-time at home, this could take several years.

acupuncture

Today, I went for an acupuncture session for the first time. I’ve got a few illnesses needing treatment that haven’t been resolved with Western medicine which has prompted me to look at alternative methods. I like the idea that acupuncture is a holistic treatment and I’m looking forward to balancing my equilibrium (well that’s the theory). I suffer from tinnitus, psoriasis and depression. Acupuncture restores balance by inserting needles into meridians which stiumlate the body into healing.

The first session was 1 1/2 hours long and the first half hour was taken up with explaining my medical history, eating habits and emotional well being. My acupuncturist, a nice lady who made me feel comfortable and safe, mapped out on my back where she was going to put the needles and swabbed the points with disinfectant. Then the needles were inserted which didn’t actually hurt. A couple of points were more sensitive than others but I wasn’t in any real pain. She then left the needles in for about 45 minutes during which time she took my pulses periodically. She explained that there are different meridians in the body which correlate to your organs each having a different pulse point on the wrist. Western medicine only recognises one pulse point on each wrist whereas acupuncture believes there are six. I went away feeling quite upbeat. Hopefully my Qi will be balanced in the oncoming weeks.

well I never knew that

Tappen – A tappen is an obstruction, or indigestible mass, found in the intestines of bears and other animals during hibernation. Also referred to as a “rectal plug.” They make it hard for the animal to defecate during hibernation, but are often passed with great pain in the spring time.

detox patches

detox.jpg

No I haven’t had a poo and stuck it too my foot, I’ve been using “Easy Nite Detox” patches from koyotakara.

Each sachet of Koyotakara contains ingredients such as wood and bamboo vinegar, tourmaline and loquet leaf which are designed to draw out toxins from your body as you sleep. The sachets are attached to adhesive strips and stuck to the sole of your foot at bedtime and upon removal in the morning they are discoloured. This apprently is the result of the patch absorbing toxins. There are 12 patches in a box giving you a 6 night detox. The patches are used daily until they stop changing colour, but I’ve completed a 6 night detox and they are still brown, presumably because I’m still full of yucky things. It is quite satisfying to put the mucky pads in the bin each morning knowing you are slightly less toxy.
