Today I had a hospital appointment in Otley to see a consultant about my ears. Since a child I have been deaf in my left ear which is something I’ve grown used to, but over the past few months I have developed tinnitus in my right ear. I had a hearing test with the audiologist, which consisted of me having to press a button every time I heard a noise through the headphones. I dislike these tests because they play such a wide range of pitches, I struggle to hear them and then I end up mistaking other sounds for the test. The telephone rang in the middle of the test which didn’t help. At one point I was in terrible pain because the audiologist was playing a noise which must have been very loud into my left ear, which I couldn’t hear, but it felt like there was a heart beating in there. I got sent off for blood tests and I’ve been referred for a scan and an x-ray.
Then I saw the consultant and we had a chat about my tinnitus which there’s not much they can do for it. The tinnitus really affects me at night time when I’m trying to get to sleep and all I can hear is a constant noise. The best description I can offer of it, is that it sounds like the noise a fridge makes when you go down into the kitchen late at night. The only thing to relive it is to play some quiet music to take my brain’s attention away from the tinnitus.
