tv

Sunday night television has greatly improved with the Forsyte Saga by John Galsworthy. I do wish people wouldn’t keep dieing though. Tonight’s episode made me quite sad.

vermilion gate

A little gem I found while reading Vermilion Gate by Aiping Mu ~

Under the Communist regime, it was common to give names with revolutionary implications to newborn babies. After the establishment of the People’s Republic in 1949, the popular names had been ‘Reconstruction of China’ (Jian-guo), ‘Victory’ (Sheng-li) or ‘Long March’ (Chang-zheng). Since China’s involvement in the Korean War in October 1950, names like ‘Resisting America’ (Kang-mei) or ‘Supporting Korea’ (Yuan-chao) had also become fashionable for both girls and boys. Several years later when I went to school, there were about half a dozen pupils in my year called either Resisting American or Supporting Korea.

i hate my job

I had a rare day off work today, which makes tomorrows return to work even harder. I detest working there. The pay, the hours and the people suck. I’m frantically trying to find a new job but no luck as yet.

My motto at work:

You go home, you cry and you want to die

My colleagues aren’t exactly bullying me as such, but some of them are unpleasant to work with. I’m sick of being called names and being hit in “so called” jest. It’s certain that my supervisor thinks it’s funny to be rude to me and thinks I take it like that despite my protests. I try to be assertive but…
Anyways, it has erroded my loyalty and the usual effort I put into the way I work. I wish actually they’d fire me because then I could go back on the dole while I look for work. Seriously I want a job..but a job where I’m not ribbed constanly.

While I was shopping today some old woman/pretend gypsy stopped me asked me if I wanted to buy a lucky charm. I said no thankyou becuase she’s stopped me before and tried to make me buy her expensive tat and lucky heather. She then informed I would be getting married soon, I ran off very quickly!

crouching tiger hidden dragon

I bought the soundtrack to the film Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. It’s beautiful oriental/classical music. To say I’m obsessed with China and all things Chinese is an understatement!

good book

I’m thouroughly enjoying reading Harlequin ~ by Bernard Cornwell. I can wholeheartily reccomend it if you enjoy reading well-researched and non-cheesy historical books. His Excalibur Triology and his book about Stonehenge are allso excellent and will always remain some of my fave books. I haven’t read his Sharpe series because I was a bit put off the fact it was made into a television series with Sean Bean. That made them seem a bit cheesy. The details he puts into his book is amazing and the moment I pick up his book I am immersed into his world. Another great thing about him is that they are realistic, i.e. not just another historical book where they all live happily ever after.
